Dog Food Choice

hello,
i provide daycare of a mini dachshund who is overweight. currently the owner is feeding him purina beneful in the morning and a brand called fresh pet select.
i haven't had too much luck influencing the owner's choice of food. from what i can tell from their website, (freshpetselect), the fresh pet select may not be too bad, but i think the purina is not helping his tubbiness - all the beneful varieties have sugar.

any one have experiences with fresh pet select?
is there any grocery store weight reduction food that is worthwhile?
that seems to be the owner's wish.
