Rachel Ray's food is, in my opinion, nowhere near the same quality as the solid Gold you were feeding. She uses all the buzz words in the advertising, but I'm severely unimpressed with the ingredients. Seems to me its just another commercial food, there are many of them out there now, they cover the bags with pictures of vegetables, real meat and homecooking, and words like "Natural" and "Holistic" but when you read the label, its another story. A general rule of thumb- if you can buy it at Walmart, its not a quality food. Similar foods, that claim natural ingredients but are really not great are things like Iams Healthy Naturals, Beneful, and Goodlife. Its all advertising, there's nothing great in the food itself.
Here are the ingredients for Rachel Ray's Chicken dog food-
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Meal, Soybean Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols) , Corn Gluten Meal, Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Dried Beet Pulp, Natural Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Dehydrated Alfalfa, Dried Peas, Dried Tomatoes, Dried Carrots, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Olive Oil, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Iron Oxide, Dried Parsley, L-Ascorbyl-2- Polyphosphate (Source of Vitamin C), Mixed Tocopherols, Niacin, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source of Vitamin K activity), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Sulfate, Folic Acid
As compared to Solid Gold Hund-N-Flocken-
Lamb, Lamb Meal, Brown Rice, Cracked Pearled Barley, Millet, Rice Bran, Oatmeal, Ocean Fish Meal, Canola Oil, Tomato Pomace, Flaxseed, Natural Flavor, Salmon Oil (source of DHA), Choline Chloride, Taurine, Dried Chicory Root, Parsley Flakes, Pumpkin Meal, Almond Oil, Sesame Oil, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Thyme, Blueberries, Cranberries, Carrots, Broccoli, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Panthothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin D Supplement, Folic Acid
Solid Gold uses whole grains and higher quality ingredients. Rachel Ray uses brewers rice (a by product of the brewing industry) soybean meal (thought to cause allergies) quite a bit of corn (as corn meal and corn gluten meal) which many people choose to avoid in dog foods, and anonymous "animal fat" which could be from any animal- chickens, pigs, raccoons, horses etc. It would be preferable that the fat is named (ie Chicken fat, or Pork fat) It should also be noted that the amount of vegetables in the Rachel Ray food is minimal- there is more salt in the food than any of the veggies advertised.
Overall, I think you'd be better of switching back to the Solid Gold. If cost is a concern, there are brands that do not sacrifice quality for price- Diamond Naturals, Chicken Soup, and Canidae are all high quality brands that cost less than Rachel Ray and have better ingredients. -Neb
