[Dog_Nutrition] Re: OK- any links to research of what dogs REALLY need?

Most of us know someone who ate poorly, drank and smoked, ect. and lived to a ripe old age, active till the day they died. Would they have lived longer with the best foods, not necessarily. As said before, lots of things affect health and longevity. However, if you look at statistics, those that eat healthy diets are most likely to live long, disease-free lives.

For people and pets we know that diet does play an important role for most of us. I'd recommend asking your question on the The Possible Canine yahoo list serv. It's run by a canine nutritionist.

Part of the problem with finding good research is that research must be funded by someone, and for pet foods the funding comes from the pet food manufacturers. These studies tend to support what the companies were hoping to find, that their food is good. I've looked around and not had much luck in finding unbiased research. Dogs don't have large non-profits that fund unbiased research like people do, and even those get infiltrated and corrupted by the big money most times. I know as government gives less and less money to higher education, corporations give more, and the research univeristies put out tends to get a little slanted towards whoever is paying the bills.
