Re: [Dog_Nutrition] Re: OK- any links to research of what dogs REALLY need?

It appears, that just like with humans, gentics plays the biggest part. I've fed pets cheaper and more expensive pet foods over many years, depending on my budget. ( just like the foods I purchased for me)  Mostly cats, I admit, but my dog was swithched to one of the "premiums" a few months ago. Yes, she does feel better on this, but at the same time is not crazy about the taste. Barring disease that just happens to some body organs, It still seems that genetics and common sense in pet care that include vet checks, plays a determining factor in the longitivity of a dog life. All pet food companies must follow standards, some of course offer better ingredients but none will cause harm to a pet, with the exceptions of the disaster that ocurred several months ago with the tainted grains. All of my pets have lived long happy lives because, I believe, I take responsibiliy for their wellbeing and make sure that they are not exposed to dangerous situations
as best as I can.

Most of us know someone who ate poorly, drank and smoked, ect. and lived to a ripe old age, active till the day they died. Would they have lived longer with the best foods, not necessarily. As said before, lots of things affect health and longevity. However, if you look at statistics, those that eat healthy diets are most likely to live long, disease-free lives.

For people and pets we know that diet does play an important role for most of us. I'd recommend asking your question on the The Possible Canine yahoo list serv. It's run by a canine nutritionist.

Part of the problem with finding good research is that research must be funded by someone, and for pet foods the funding comes from the pet food manufacturers. These studies tend to support what the companies were hoping to find, that their food is good. I've looked around and not had much luck in finding unbiased research. Dogs don't have large non-profits that fund unbiased research like people do, and even those get infiltrated and corrupted by the big money most times. I know as government gives less and less money to higher education, corporations give more, and the research univeristies put out tends to get a little slanted towards whoever is paying the bills.
