[CDFC] Re: New to the Group

Hi Allen............I am also in the process to switching to raw but after all is said and done , I think it will be a combo of raw and home-cooked with the occasional canned/kibble.

I was very content with home-cooked and high end commercial, but I resuced a Great Pyrenees recently that is a very picky eater , to the point of frustrating, but I am finding he takes very well to raw.
So I have been dipping my toes in it more deeply. My other dog is a
Lab so she will eat ANYTHING so I am not concerned with her. I still have alot to learn though.

There are groups that help with the new raw diets and I find the group Raw-Lite very casual where not just one diet is the right diet. Some of the other raw groups just come with way too many rules and personalities. Raw is the best and that is it......that isnt me. I was referred to Raw-lite from another group I was on and I am finding it exactly how she described it....casual.

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/RAW-lite/

Monica Segal's book 'Optimum Nutrition' is really informative along with Carina MacDonalds 'Raw Dog Food' both of which I think you can find on that site. Carina's book is very to the point and very basic to the new raw feeder. She also states there is more then one diet that is correct.....which is the attitude I like.

I am amazed that my guy actually chooses the raw over commercial or cooked. I started with Nature's Variety raw patties to where I just fed them chicken backs (RMB-raw meaty bone) tonight and they devoured it in record time.

I'm taking it slow and will still feed commercial at times....as I'm not sure if I can be continually consistent with the raw to provide a 'balanced long term nutrition'.

Good Luck.....

Maryanne......

He will walk and it seems to improve with use, but after a quiet period, laying down, he will favor it again. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Re: [Dog_Nutrition] Re: Rocky is favoring a hind leg

Before you do any surgery have a lymes test. It could also be that. I had a
puppy owner call me to tell me her puppy had a bad knee, according to her
vet and was going to have surgery the following week. I have never had knee
issues with my dogs but it an happen from an accident also. On the weekend
prior to surgery the puppies other knee went out. They rushed the dog to
the ER. They told the vet about the up coming surgery. He checked both knees
and told them the knees were perfect. They problem had nothing to do with
his legs. He then took blood and ran a bunch of tests including Lyme test.
They puppy had it. They were told if they had put the dog under for a
surgery not needed in his condition he would have died. With med's he was up and
running in no time. So check for that also.

Re: [Dog_Nutrition] Rocky is favoring a hind leg

Hi, Don't forget about sympathy pain. This is one another joint or area is actually causing the trouble and it sends signals to other parts of the body. Has she had her spine checked? hip or even something stuck up inside the toe or high in between the toes.  An xray at this point would be advisable. Best wishes.

Re: [Dog_Nutrition] Rocky is favoring a hind leg

>He climbed onto his futon for a nap and when he got up he was holding up a hind leg. What could this be?

It looks like knee/joint is hurting him. It happened to my dog (Corgi) 3 years ago too. At her age of mere 1 years old,she suddenly started limping and,we took her to vet for check the kneee.THe vet told us to keep an eye on her for 1 week and if not changing anything, bring her back,so we did.

Second trip, my dog sometimes holding leg like you describe so,my vet tried manipulate the knee to see if any movements hurts her.At one point, she tried nip my vet with screaching sound. It definitely hurting for her.

Later the day,the vet took X-ray of knee. And told me that she looked like ligament tore and showed abnormal knee movement called "Drawers syndrome".

So,we went to ortho vet. The special ortho vet also agree to my local vet diagnose so,we discussed how she can fix the prob. One thing she told us was that since she is smaller dog,she will check if patella (spelling ok?? It is a knee cap) is sliding or not.

After that,we were so worried and read a lot about TPLO surgery to thread surgery that does not require screws and metals in her body..

We then ended up setting appointment for non screws/metals method and my dog went under surgery.

She called on the day and told us that her ligament was not tore at all, knee cap was fine, and all she did was opened up her leg and closed up doing nothing.... So, after the surgery, upper leveled vet tried talked to us about it but still,he had no idea what caused limping problems.

He suggested to try swimming pool tread mill thing as rehab, but we did not see a point without knowing what really causing it so,we stopped going to see the vet.

So,after surgery,6-8 weeks later of restricted activity, she healed up the surgery area but, still limping continued.

That is where I read about glucosamin and I gave her the joint care tablet for 1 week and,she became limp free and she still is.

I gave her this tablet because I remembered our local vet was telling us that she had possible arthritis by looking at X-ray.

I am not sure if just restricted activity and give joint care fixed the limping problems without going through not so pleasant surgery experience.

Palette had to feel pain for 6-8 weeks with perfect ligament...

She likes running like a wind, and we sometimes race to our house when walking, and she is quite active. But some habits stay with her;when she goes for potty for pee,she put weight more on surgery-free leg. I have been watching her gait now and then,so I know she puts equal weights on hind legs when walking but when she pees..the habit comes back and make me wonder what really was a cause.

I think visiting a vet is good idea and if you can, until your dog stop showing of pain, maybe refrain from going for walk and jumping will be better.

I hope your dog get better soon....

[Dog_Nutrition] Re: Rocky is favoring a hind leg

He could have just pulled something. My boyfriend's dog is getting on (9yo) but still loves to run around like the devil, and when he overexerts, or lands wrong, or tries to pull a turn thats a wee bit too tight, he might favor a leg for a day or two. You know your dog best, if he seems to be in severe pain, can't place any weight on it at all, or if it seems like it might be broken, you should def. take him to the vet. If it's an off and on thing and you try to wait it out and it doesn't last more than a day or two, it was probably just a sprain. I would def. try to keep him from running amok until he feels better though.

Sound like his knee. I would have it checked by a vet.
